Amazon’s fleet of Rivian-made electric delivery vans is growing. Since first rolling out earlier this year, the retail giant’s new zero-tailpipe emission vehicles have made more than 5 million deliveries in the US, with its fleet-size exceeding 1,000 EDVs (electric delivery vans).

That’s still only a fraction of the company’s overall transportation fleet, which is comprised of 30,000 Amazon-branded delivery vehicles and 20,000 branded trailers. But the electric-portion is growing, with Rivian eventually expecting to deliver 100,000 vans to the company.

Starting in July, the EDVs first rolled out in Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Nashville, San Diego, and Seattle. Since then, they’ve been put into service in a bunch of new cities, including Austin, Boston, Denver, Houston, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Madison, Newark, New York, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Portland, Provo, and Salt Lake City .

The vans have been making their way into Amazon’s service, as Rivian’s manufacturing pace slowly accelerates. The EV company said it made 7,363 R1T pickup trucks, R1S SUVs, and EDVs during the three-month period that ended on September 30 — though it didn’t say how much of each. Rivian also said it delivered 6,584 vehicles during the same span. (The company is expected to report its third quarter earnings later this week.)

Drone Footage Shows Killer Whales Hunting and Eating Great White Sharks

Frequent readers of CNET Science will remember Port and Starboard, the duo of killer whales from a story we published in June, which detailed research showing great white sharks were being hunted by the whales off the coast of South Africa. New aerial footage, released on Monday, shows one member of the murderous pair — Starboard — actually making a kill.

The footage was released on YouTube as part of a new study, led by Alison Towner, published on Oct. 3 in the journal Ecology. Towner also led the earlier study which used tracking and sensor data to show the great white sightings had plummeted as the killer whales moved in. The researchers hypothesized, from evidence found on shark carcasses, that killer whales were hunting the great whites and any surviving sharks had quite literally been scared away from the area.

The new aerial footage, captured by a private drone operator and a helicopter pilot’s Samsung S21, seems to confirm this and is the first direct evidence of orcas killing and eating great white sharks. It was captured in May at Mossel Bay, South Africa, and some footage had previously been released via the Discovery Channel.

“This behavior has never been witnessed in detail before, and certainly never from the air,” said Towner, who works as a senior shark scientist at Marine Dynamics Academy in Gansbaai, South Africa.

At first glance a photograph of Mars released by NASA appears to show a doorway carved into the rock.

The grainy image, captured by the Curiosity rover last week, clearly shows a rectangular gap in the rockface and has, perhaps inevitably, spawned conspiracy theories that point to it as evidence of alien life on the red planet.

For as long as humans have looked up to the skies we have seen things that aren’t really there – whether pictures in constellations, a face on the moon or a “mysterious hut” spotted by Chinese scientists that turned out to be a boulder.

And the simple explanation for the “door” on Mars is actually contained within the photograph itself if you look more closely, scientists have said.

It shows evidence that the feature was formed through “normal geological processes”, Professor Sanjeev Gupta at Imperial College London explained to The Daily Telegraph.

A deep crack or fissure is visible inside the “door”, indicating a fracture in the rock – something that happens on both Mars and Earth and could have taken place any time in the past few hundred million years.

“The crack is a fracture and they are plentiful on Mars and Earth – no need for marsquakes to produce them,” said Professor Gupta, who has worked on the Curiosity mission with NASA.

In case you were worried, Don’t Worry Darling is a perfectly serviceable slice of big-screen weirdness. This slick psychological drama is a glossy, stylishly surreal thriller with something to say, featuring an endless array of gorgeous fashions and Florence Pugh on excellent form. What more do you want?

Having premiered in September amid bizarre reports from the set and film festivals, Don’t Worry Darling is available to rent and buy online now. The 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD release date is Nov. 29, but before that it’ll stream on HBO Max from Nov. 7.

Pugh stars as a glamorous 1950s housewife living a picture-perfect suburban life. She even has a trophy husband, played by pop star Harry Styles in a wardrobe of impeccable suits and enviable midcentury shirts. But none of the gossiping wives know where their husbands go each day in their shiny Cadillacs, and Pugh begins to wonder what’s really driving the sun-dappled desert town’s smoothly sinister leader, played by Chris Pine. No one else seems worried about it, darling, but there’s definitely something weird going on in this retro utopia.

Director Olivia Wilde slowly cranks up the unsettling aspects of this odd idyll, tormenting Pugh’s increasing unsettled housewife with teasing visions and mounting paranoia. Wilde also plays one of the other wives, perpetually armed with a cocktail and sharply penciled side-eye. There’s a hint of The Stepford Wives about them, and you’ll probably also find yourself thinking of any number of midcentury melodramas and domestic chillers that

Book ban efforts by conservative parents take aim at library apps

She said book-ban campaigns that started with criticizing school board members and librarians have now turned their attention to the tech startups that run the apps, which had existed for years without drawing much controversy.

“It’s not enough to take a book off the shelf,” she said. “Now they want to filter electronic materials that have made it possible for so many people to have access to literature and information they’ve never been able to access before.”

Kimberly Hough, a parent of two children in Brevard Public Schools, said her 9-year-old noticed immediately when the Epic app disappeared a few weeks ago because its collection had become so useful during the pandemic.

“They could look up books by genre, what their interests are, fiction, nonfiction, so it really is an online library for kids to find books they want to read,” she said. She said her daughter would read “everything available” about animals.

Russell Bruhn, a spokesperson for Brevard Public Schools, said the district removed Epic because of a new Florida law that requires book-by-book reviews of online libraries. According to the law, signed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, “each book made available to students” through a school library must be “selected by a school district employee.” Epic says its online libraries are curated by employees to make sure they’re age-appropriate.

Bruhn said that no parents complained about the app and that no specific books had concerned school officials but that officials decided the collection needed review.
