Samsung Electronics has appointed Lee Jae-yong — who is known in the West as Jay Y. Lee — as its executive chairman, giving the grandson of the company’s founder formal control, the South Korean tech giant announced today. The announcement came on the same day that Samsung announced a series of disappointing earnings resultsas profits fell 23 percent compared to the previous quarter.

According to Samsung’s official announcement justifying the appointment, “the Board cited the current uncertain global business environment and the pressing need for stronger accountability and business stability in approving the recommendation.” Samsung is currently battling a slump in demand for several of its key businesses including memory chips, mobile phones, and TVs. It doesn’t expect demand to pick back up until the second half of next year.

Lee’s ascension is unlikely to change much for the company in the short term, Bloomberg notes, given he’s long served as Samsung’s de-facto leader. But formally taking control means Lee can take bigger strategic decisions to steer the company through a turbulent economic period, including pushing through acquisitions, mergers, and funneling investment into emerging technologies.

You can add another name to your list of filmmakers trying to develop the next Star Wars movie: Damon Lindelof. Deadline reports that Lindelof, who rose to prominence as the co-creator of Lost and more recently won multiple Emmys for his work on HBO’s TV adaptation of Watchmen, is developing and co-writing the film, although it’s unclear who his writing partner could be. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who worked on several episodes of Ms. Marvelis reportedly in talks to direct.

This is all a far cry from Disney’s original plans for the Star Wars franchise. At one point in 2015 the studio had plans to release a new Star Wars movie every year, interspersing its new trilogy of films with standalone releases. But, more recently, the studio’s focus has shifted towards the smaller screen with Disney Plus shows including Andor and The Mandalorian.

At this point it’s unclear when Lindelof’s Star Wars film could be set in the franchise’s timeline, who could star, or when the film might be released. But, for what it’s worth, Deadline reports that the project “seems to have the most momentum out of all all the films currently in development at the studio.” With any luck, it could be the one to bring an end to Star Wars‘ cinematic purgatory.
