The thumbs-up emoji has long been one of my go-to responses. It’s simple. It’s versatile. It’s friendly. Or so I thought until a Daily Mail headline jolted me out of my emoji-happy stupor this week. “Why NOBODY should be using the ‘thumbs up’ emoji in 2022,” the publication blares.

Cut to me making the kind of expression you see on the confused emoji:

“Sending a thumbs-up can be seen as passive aggressive and even confrontational, according to Gen Z who claims they feel attacked whenever it is used,” reads the article, speaking for a generation by way of a 10-month-old thread in the adulting subreddit and an alleged Perspectus Global poll in which young ‘uns cite the 10 emojis that make people seem old. Cloudflare last week announced a $1.25 billion funding program for startups that builds on its software, Cloudflare Workers. But this isn’t a corporate venture fund and that sum is not company money.

Rather, it’s an initiative in which the cloud infrastructure company curates a group of its startup customers and presents them to venture capitalists, each of which committed $50 million to back companies building on Cloudflare Workers. The list of 26 venture funds includes big players like NEA and Boldstart and smaller firms like Pear VC. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince told me that number has continued to grow since the project was announced in September.

The reason this is interesting is that while public companies have been drastically increasing their presence in startup funding in recent years, it’s largely been through one of two playbooks: Companies were either setting aside a sleeve of capital on their balance sheet to back startups in adjacent or complementary sectors to their own, or they were launching an accelerator program.

This strategy from Cloudflare feels fresh. And if successful, it could prove to be a pretty smart bet. The program basically helps funnel money to its customers, thus securing their need for the platform, while also attracting startups to consider building on Cloudflare over other platforms — without Cloudflare having to spend anything. It’s worth noting companies entering this program, regardless of whether they get pitched to VCs, do get multiple software features for a year for free.

A Florida-headquartered company has been ordered to pay about €75,000 (around $73,000) in compensation and other fees after firing a Netherlands-based remote worker who refused to keep their webcam on all day, NL Times reports. The company, Chetu, said the unnamed employee was required to attend a virtual classroom with their webcam turned on for the entire day and their screen remotely monitored.

But when the employee refused, saying that leaving their webcam on for “9 hours a day” made them feel uncomfortable and was an invasion of their privacy, the company dismissed them, citing “refusal to work” and “insubordination.”

The court ruled that the reasons for dismissal were not valid

In a decision published last week, the court ruled that these were not sufficient reasons to dismiss the employee. “There has been no evidence of a refusal to work,” the court’s decision reads (via Google Translate). It added that “instruction to leave the camera on is Contrary to the employee’s right to respect for his private life” and that the dismissal was not legally valid.

Specifically, the court cites Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which grants citizens the “right to respect for private and family life.” Chetu argued that requiring an employee to leave their webcam on would be no different from management being able to see them while they’re working in a traditional office. Tree Rings Unlock Evidence of Mysterious Cosmic Radiation ‘Storms’

The universe is billions of years old, but telescopes and the modern study of the cosmos have only been around for a few centuries. So scientists turn to unlikely sources, like tree rings, for data on cosmic events that predate Galileo.

Over the years, tree ring data from around the world has shown evidence of several unexplained and potentially devastating space weather events that delivered a dose of radiation to Earth and many of its inhabitants, including the trees themselves.

“These huge bursts of cosmic radiation, known as Miyake events, have occurred approximately once every thousand years, but what causes them is unclear,” explained physicist Benjamin Pope from Australia’s University of Queensland, in a statement. “The leading theory is that they are huge solar flares.”

Pope led a team of researchers who analyzed tree ring data dating back over a millennia to investigate the link between Miyake events and solar flares. Their study findings appear in Proceedings of the Royal Society A .

In the paper, the team notes that one of the events with the most tree ring data occurred in the year 774 and appears to have been more than 10 times as powerful as the Carrington event of 1859, which was a geomagnetic storm tied to eruptions on the sun. When the blast hit Earth, it reportedly caused telegraph lines to burst into flames and generated global auroras.
