Intel NUCs getting bigger to accommodate bigger GPUs

| Computer, Computers

Intel has teased its upcoming NUC 13 Extreme PC, the latest addition to the NUC (Next Unit of Computing) family of small-form-factor computers and barebone computer kits. The PC codenamed Raptor Canyon was revealed at TwitchCon this past weekend, as reported by VideoCardz, and notably sports a significantly bigger design than its predecessor to support larger graphics cards.

A teardown of the upcoming PC was carried out on the convention floor, giving us an indication of its larger size compared to previous models within Intel’s NUC range. It confirmed that Raptor Canyon can support up to a full desktop Core i9 processor and up to 64GB of DDR5 memory. 2.5 and 3-slot graphics cards are also supported, with an unnamed Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series being installed during the presentation. There’s no mention that the system can support Nvidia’s recently released RTX 40 series, which brings a much chunkier design than previous generational GPU releases.

Its larger size allows the Intel NUC 13 Extreme to support a triple-slot desktop GPU up to 12-inches in length.

Intel has increased the size of the next-gen NUC Extreme from the 8L chassis on the previous generational release to a 13.9L chassis for the 13th-gen NUC gaming PC. This larger-capacity PC doesn’t spell the end for Intel’s typically minuscule form factor however, as the Extreme series is designed as a full-desktop replacement system, and less powerful models such as the NUC 12 Enthusiast and NUC 12 Pro series are

NBA Opening Night: How to Watch 76ers vs. Celtics, Lakers vs. Warriors on TNT

| Computer, Computers

The NBA season starts on Tuesday night with an awesome doubleheader. First up, two of the presumed top teams in the East square off in Boston as the 76ers meet the Celtics. After trading for James Harden at the deadline last year, this will be the first full season with Harden playing in Philadelphia alongside MVP candidate Joel Embiid. The Celtics reached the NBA Finals last season and return with largely the same team, adding point guard Malcom Brogdon to a lineup centered around Jaylen Brown, Jason Tatum and NBA Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart.

After things wrap up in Boston, we head to San Francisco for a star-studded contest between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. Coming off a miserable season in which they missed the playoffs, the Lakers will try again to make the Russell Westbrook addition work with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The Warriors are the defending champs and return with their fearsome foursome of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins.

The 76ers and Celtics tip off at 7:30 pm ET (4:30 pm PT)followed by the Lakers and Warriors at 10 p.m. ET (7 p.m. PT). Both games are on TNT. Keep reading to see how you can watch both contests without cable.

More People Should Tune In to This Engrossing Horror Anthology Series

| Computer, Computers

In an age of endless Marvel movies, we take for granted how hard it is to tell a story that spans multiple generations and weaves disparate pieces into one grand narrative. Many have tried, many have floundered.

Anyone with such sprawling storytelling ambitions, however, could take a lesson from the horror anthology podcast Old Gods of Appalachia from Asheville, North Carolina’s DeepNerd Media. Launched in 2019, Old Gods is an engrossing and otherworldly saga, set in an alternate version of Appalachia, where the land is riddled with supernatural entities — so-called “haints” and whatnot — and the humans who often find themselves tangled up with them. After a friend recommended it, I powered through all available episodes in two weeks.

As of this writing, there are three seasons comprising more than 40 free episodes (with even more for Patreon subscribers). What starts out as the tale of a doomed coal town named Barlo, Kentucky, expands into a whole universe with narrative tentacles that reach back to 1756 and forward well into the 1900s. The podcast’s penchant for nonlinear storytelling zips you back and forth in time and gives you the sense there’s an infinite number of people, and creatures, to meet in every holler the show visits.

Maybe you spend three episodes with a small-town magistrate, or a young couple that make a bad deal, or a little boy whose family meets a grim fate. You might leave these characters behind for a bit, but in the Old

2024 Volvo EX90 Is a 7-Seat Luxury SUV With 300 Miles of Electric Range

| Computer, Computers

After weeks of teases and previews, Volvo drew back the curtains on the 2024 EX90 in a virtual event this morning. The newest and largest member of Volvo’s growing family of electric SUVs is scheduled to hit the road in fall 2023, bringing with it not just the next evolution of Scandinavian vehicle design, but also the next generations of the automaker’s driver aids and infotainment tech.

At first glance, the EX90 looks a lot like what it is: a next-generation, all-electric version of the automaker’s current XC90 seven-passenger SUV that will live alongside its combustion-powered sibling before ultimately replacing it when the Volvo completes its planned transition to a fully electric lineup in 2030.

Familiar design elements like the sculpted hood, Thor’s Hammer LED light signature and vertical taillights that end in a C-shaped flourish can still be found in the EX90’s design, but new details bring the electric SUV’s design into the future. For example, the T-shaped Thor’s Hammer is now made up of chunky segments that light up in sequence with the LED fog lights when the SUV is started. Activating the headlamps causes the DRL’s horizontal segments to open like eyelids, rotating out of the way to reveal the LED headlamps and high-beam projectors.

The motorized horizontal segments of the Thor’s Hammer light signature open to reveal the headlamp projectors.
