Best Affordable Smart Thermostats of 2022

| Computer, Computers

Smart home devices have been taking over dwellings across the world. From security cameras to devices that can shut lights off, the options of smart home systems are vast and never-ending. However, no smart home devices can compare to the smart thermostat.

As more and more people transition to smart home gadgets, those on a tight budget might think that smart thermostats are out of reach. This is starting to change, though. Smart thermostats are dropping in price, and there are a number that are actually quite affordable. For example, the Amazon Smart Thermostat is only $60. There are a couple of other options, too, including a handful under $100.

Finding the best budget smart thermostat can be challenging. Below you’ll find the four best smart thermostats we recommend for $130 or less, including the Amazon and Wyze models I mentioned above, as well as more affordable products from Nest and Ecobee (certified refurbished).

Chris Monroe/CNET

Amazon took a look at Nest and Ecobee’s premium flagship smart thermostats and went an entirely different route. Instead of starting with a $249 model like the competition, it introduced its first thermostat for just 60 bucks.

The Amazon Smart Thermostat is a solid choice. It has a simple, modern design, an easy installation and a straightforward configuration in the Alexa app. Because this thermostat works with the Alexa app, it integrates seamlessly with Alexa-enabled smart speakers and displays.

The thermostat doesn’t work with Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit, and you’ll need to buy

‘Werewolf by Night’ Ending and Marvel Easter Eggs Explained

| Computer, Computers

Welcome, guys and ghouls, to Marvel’s Halloween special on Disney Plus. One-hour one-off Werewolf by Night is frankly fun (see CNET’s review) and also something very different for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Let’s dive into the comic book references, salute the tributes to classic horror and speculate about what’s next for Gael GarcĂa Bernal’s Jack Russell and Laura Donnelly’s Elsa Bloodstone.

Werewolf by Night is streaming now. Read on… if you dare! (Not because this article is scary, just because of spoilers).

What’s the ending about?

Monster hunters have gathered at the home of the late Ulysses Bloodstone to claim the Bloodstone, a supernatural super-weapon that’s the source of the family’s power. But the hunter with the most kills, Jack Russell, is not the deadly slayer he professes to be: Instead of killing creatures, he frees them. With Elsa’s help, Jack helps the hunt’s prey escape, revealing the tentacled terror Man-Thing is more of a gentle giant (named Ted). In the process, Jack is captured and forced by the Bloodstone to transform into a monstrous alter ego of his own: He’s the comic book character Werewolf By Night.

Before transforming, Jack gets up close and personal to Elsa’s scent, in the hope his bestial form remembers her — a trick that’s only worked once before, which suggests an interesting story from his past. Fortunately it works, and the werewolf and Elsa hack and slash their way through the remaining hunters and henchmen. Elsa claims the Bloodstone as her

Betting Big on Bad Behavior to Score Political Points

All it took was a 30-second video for Eric Greitens to become a trending topic on social media this summer.

The Missouri Republican Senate hopeful’s ad starts with him walking up to a home, shotgun in hand and pistol on his hip. He says the target “feeds on corruption and is marked by the stripes of cowardice.” After a team of men in military fatigues ram the door down, Greitens walks in saying he’s acting on behalf of former President Donald Trump’s political movement, hunting “RINOs” — a mocking abbreviation among conservatives, “Republicans In Name Only.”

The ad was quickly pulled down by Facebook and labeled as “abusive” by Twitter. That’s when Greitens’ real ad campaign began.

A tweet from Eric Greitens thanking the Washington Post for publishing his video.

After social media sites acted against his video, Eric Greitens posted that it was available on the Washington Post website.

As condemnation swiftly came from across the political spectrum, Greitens reveled in his sudden virality. A former Navy Seal, Greitens’ political career was already filled with controversy, including accusations of sexual abuse and campaign finance violations that ultimately led him to resign his position as Missouri’s governor in 2018. Now, he was again the center of attention. “Thank you to @WashingtonPost for hosting our video on their website!” Greitens tweeted, alongside a link to a story from the paper. “Everybody can visit the link below to see our new ad!”

Within the first 24 hours, Greitens claimed, his video had already been watched at least 3.5 million times. And to the

DuckDuckGo for Mac is now available for public testing

| Computer, Computers

DuckDuckGo is rolling out its web browsing app for Mac users as an open beta test. Designed for privacy, the app was announced back in April as a closed beta, but is now available for all Mac users to try before its official public launch.

The desktop browser includes the same built-in protections we’ve seen already featured in DuckDuckGo’s mobile apps, combining DuckDuckGo’s search engine, defenses against third-party tracking, cookie pop-up protection, and its popular one-click data clearing ‘Fire Button .’

DuckDuckGo’s web browser integrates some of its most popular search engine features, such as the ‘fire’ button that clears your browsing data.

Some additional features have been added to the browser (version 0.30) since its original announcement. Now users can try Duck Player, a feature that protects users from targeted ads and cookies while watching YouTube content. Ads viewed within the Duck Player will not be personalized, which DuckDuckGo claims actually removed most YouTube ads as a result during testing. YouTube will still register your views, but content watched through Duck Player won’t contribute to your YouTube advertising profile.

Pinned tabs and a new bookmarks bar have been included to address feedback from early beta testing, as well as a way to view your locally stored browsing history. DuckDuckGo’s Cookie Consent Pop-Up Manager is also available which works on about 50 percent of sites (with more to come) to automatically choose the most private option and spare users from the annoying pop-up messages. The app also lets

More People Should Watch the Very Best Show on Netflix

| Computer, Computers

Given that 1899, the latest show by German duo Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, is out this week, maybe it’s time to check out their first masterpiece, Dark. For my money, it’s the best show on Netflix.

A mind-bending show that deftly combines internal family drama with time travel, Dark is the rarest of things: a show without a single dip in quality. All three seasons rule in every way imaginable.

The Stranger Things comparison makes sense, but Dark is a very different show.

Netflix

Dark, at its core, is a mystery series. Much likes Stranger Things — the show it’s most frequently compared to — Dark’s first season focuses almost exclusively on the search for a missing child. But in this show the child hasn’t escaped to a parallel universe, but a different one time 30 years in the past. Before long Dark is a show that operates across multiple time zones and dimensions.

Dark has everything. It does complex, interweaving plot twists on a level that makes Westworld look like a pretend-clever show for children. It earns these twists by also being a delicately written study of broken familial interrelationships and small-town claustrophobia.

It’s a show that juggles the risks that come with time travel narratives with ease. Dark’s plot is complex to the point where I make a sport of waiting for it to completely fall apart. I spent three whole seasons waiting for Dark to drop the ball and collapse beneath its own
