‘Me too’ investing is eating returns TechCrunch

| Computer, Computers

For an asset class that should be reinventing itself all the time, it is surprising to see how resistant some venture funds are to change.

As a partner in a fund of funds, I attend a lot of annual meetings, talk with a lot of venture fund general partners and review a lot of investor decks.

What has particularly surprised me is how many funds tell exactly the same story and invest in exactly the same areas: B2B SaaS, cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure tech, e-commerce brands and crypto/fintech.

As I have written many times before, venture is about elephant hunting. Great funds have at least one, and ideally a few, enormously successful, fund-returning investments. Ownership and letting the great companies “ride” (and not selling them early) is crucial to getting outsized returns.

But, the outsized returns only come from companies that are market leaders in enormous markets. The second-place company, and sometimes, the third-place company can win, too, but of course will not be as large. But the companies that end up at #300 or #99 or even #20 in a market do not end up as good investments.

I was thinking about this recently when I looked at a map of martech SaaS companies that chiefmartec and MartechTribe prepared recently. What is amazing is how many marketing SaaS companies still get funded:

While not nearly as bad as marketing tech, we are seeing a huge inflation in the number of cybersecurity and

‘She-Hulk’ Episode 9 Recap: A Stunning Rollercoaster Finale

| Computer, Computers

Now that’s how you end a TV show. In the finale episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, streaming now on Disney PlusShe-Hulk rips apart Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe and shreds the rule book for how Marvel stories should wrap up.

This is definitely not an ending you’ll see coming.

If you need a refresher, here’s our recap of last week’s episode 8 (or start with She Hulk episode 1). Now let’s delve into the latest installment, titled Whose Show is This?, complete with a ton of cameos and Easter eggs — and lots of spoilers!

Savage She-Hulk

The season finale is all about endings, but let’s not forget the beginning: a retro-styled prologue that imagines what this show would be like if made in the 1970s, in the style of legendary series The Incredible Hulk (which ran from 1978 to 1982 , plus a few TV movies). This is more than a cute homage to the classic show: She-Hulk was actually created because of the show, as Marvel comics staffers hurriedly created a woman version of the angry green giant so they’d grab the character rights before the TV show creators could think of it.

The series starred Bill Bixby as Dr. David Banner (the TV guys changed his name because they didn’t like Stan Lee’s charm for alliterative names). Muscular Lou Ferrigno donned green body paint when Banner transformed into the Hulk. The ’70’s Savage She-Hulk in episode 9 delightfully mimics that old school approach.

Developers pour into crypto space despite stagnant markets TechCrunch

| Computer, Computers

This year was huge for the crypto developer space even though the digital asset market continues to wallow in a downturn, according to a new report by web3 developer platform Alchemy.

Although the crypto market capitalization is down about 58% year to date, web3 developers are pouring into the space.

The report found that developer activity increased based on the number of crypto software developer kit (SDK) libraries being downloaded, smart contracts being stored on blockchains, and the growth in the number of decentralized applications (dApps) in the market.

“It’s a really exciting time in web3 overall and especially in the web3 development space,” Jason Shah, head of growth at Alchemy, said to TechCrunch. “We were shocked at the results [because they run] counter to the narratives out there with token prices being down, pullbacks in investments, and even layoffs. But in the data with libraries, smart contracts, and dApp growth, all those numbers are up year over year.”

Despite the bear market, crypto has become a “market builder,” with many clearly undeterred, Shah said.

“Crypto bear markets are often when the best projects get built,” Francesco Melpignano, CEO of layer-1 blockchain Kadena, told TechCrunch.

Getty Images CEO says firms racing to sell AI art could be stepping into illegal territory

| Computer, Computers

Getty Images CEO Craig Peters has criticized companies “racing” to commercialize AI art generators, saying firms aren’t thinking through the potential legal and ethical hazards of the technology.

In an interview with The Verge, Peters reiterated Getty Images’ rule against selling AI content (which it banned in September), while announcing a new partnership between the company and Israeli firm Bria to offer AI-powered image editing tools. Getty Images’ stance on AI-generated content marks a clear difference with rival Shutterstock, which announced today it will be integrating AI art generator DALL-E directly into its site’s offerings.

“I don’t think those questions have been answered.”

“We took a step around AI-generated imagery to protect our customers,” Peters told The Verge. “There’s a lot of questions out there right now — about who owns the copyright to that material, about the rights that were leveraged to create that material — and we don’t want to put our customers into that legal risk area […] There have been assertions that copyright is owned by x, y, z, by certain platforms, but I don’t think those questions have been answered.”

Peters added: “I think we’re watching some organizations and individuals and companies being reckless […] I think the fact that these questions are not being addressed is the issue here. In some case, they’re just being thrown to the wayside. I think that’s dangerous. I don’t think it’s responsible. I think it could be illegal.”

Many AI art generators are trained on data
