Global phenom Kpop group BTS is compared so its members can undertake their mandated military service before reforming “around 2025,” the role official statement Monday. In response, fans flocked to Twitter promising to wait for their triumphant return.

BTS has risen to international stardom in the decade since forming, with members of the Korean boy band permitted to postpone their military service in 2020 to continue performing.

The statement from BTS’ label BigHit Music announcing the group’s hiatus states that band members will resume giving performances after they complete military service, and “there’s much more yet to come in the years ahead.” Fans have met the news with sadness and admiration.

BTS member Jin will be the first to enlist at some point this month, with the remaining members of the group signing up for service later.

Fans won’t be left completely left, as some members will still conduct individual activities into the first half of next year. BTS has also stockpiled content in advance to release during the hiatus, per an investors note released by BigHit parent company Hybe Corporation.

SpaceX’s satellite internet service is coming to planes with Starlink Aviation

SpaceX’s satellite internet service Starlink will soon be available on select airplanes with the official launch of Starlink Aviation next year, the company has announced. It claims the service will offer internet speeds of up to 350Mbps to each plane equipped with its Aero Terminal, which it says is fast enough for video calls, online gaming, “and other high data rate activities.”

It’s certainly a big leap up from the typical speeds offered by most in-flight Wi-Fi. OneZero reports that most flights either use air-to-ground systems which top out at around 10Mbps per flight (and only work while flying over land), while current satellite systems typically offer between 30Mbps and 100Mbps. Since these speeds are per plane, actual speeds can vary depending on the number of passengers using the internet in each flight.

Support pages on SpaceX’s site claim that its internet connections will be available throughout taxi, takeoff, flight over both land and water, and landing, with latency as low as 20ms. “Starlink Aviation will have global coverage,” an FAQ reads. “Since the satellites are moving in low-earth orbit, there are always satellites overhead or nearby to provide a strong signal at high latitudes and in polar regions — unlike with geo-stationary satellites.” Deliveries are expected to start in mid-2023.

Nvidia has announced a “multi-year collaboration” with Microsoft to build “one of the most powerful AI supercomputers in the world,” designed to handle the huge computing workloads needed to train and scale AI. The collaboration will see Nvidia utilizing Microsoft’s scalable virtual machine instances to accelerate advances in generative AI models like DALL-E.

Based on Microsoft’s Azure cloud infrastructure, the AI supercomputer will use tens of thousands of Nvidia’s powerful and data center GPUs and its . According to Nvidia, the combination of Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and Nvidia’s GPUs, networking, and full AI suite will allow more enterprises to train, deploy, and scale AI — including large, state-of-the-art models. The two companies will also collaboratively develop DeepSpeedMicrosoft’s deep learning optimization software.

Meta Pays for NYC Billboard Attacking Apple’s iMessage and Touting WhatsApp

The “anything you can do, I can do better” back and forth between Meta and Apple has made its way to a New York City billboard just outside the famous “crossroads of the world” in Times Square. This time, it’s about Apple’s iMessage.

Facebook co-founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Monday announced a new billboard above Pennsylvania Station, just south of Times Square and near the famous Broadway area theaters, to attack Apple. This time, his company is taking on the iPhone maker’s popular iMessage texting service, contending that Meta’s WhatsApp is more trustworthy.

“WhatsApp is far more private and secure than iMessage, with end-to-end encryption that works across both iPhones and Android, including group chats,” Zuckerberg wrote in a post on Instagram, the popular photo sharing service his company also owns. He also highlighted other features like missing messageswhich iMessage doesn’t have.

The Google Docs API is here: you can soon embed other apps into your documents

The @ symbol is about to become the most important feature in Google Docs. As Google continues to invest in making Workspace a more connected and powerful platform, it’s also opening Docs up to third-party developers in a big way. Going forward, all you’ll need to type is “@” and the name of a file or app you’re looking for, and you’ll be able to see and edit it from within Google Docs.

The feature is called “smart chips” and refers to essentially embedding other apps into Google Docs. The API that makes all this work is new — Google announced it at its Cloud Next conference along with a handful of partners. Asana users will be able to manage their tasks through an embed in Docs; you’ll be able to see visual previews of Miro and Figma boards, though there’s no in-Docs editing power there yet; and you’ll be able to see live-updating analytics through Tableau.

The underlying shift here is a huge one, and Google’s actually late to it. Notion, Coda, and other apps have grown popular by evolving digital documents into low-code website builders. You can embed YouTube videos and PDF files, work with your spreadsheets, and manage a kanban board, all within a single “document.” Google Docs, henceforth, has long been stuck emulating an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper.

(One note is that this is not exactly related to yesterday’s YouTube announcement that all creators will get @ handles going forward, but it’s interesting to
