Best Laptops for College in 2022

| Computer, Computers

Having a reliable laptop is a must in college — it can be difficult getting along without one. Many university classes now allow or even require students to use their laptops in class for a variety of purposes. Having a laptop with a long battery life is essential for note-taking during long lectures. You also want one that’s light enough and small enough to fit in a backpack or tote, for easy travel. Performance and longevity are important to consider as well. A basic, entry-level laptop will cover you for general classwork, but the more you’re able to spend, the longer it will likely last you — important if it needs to last you four years or more.

With the supply chain issues and chip shortages we’ve seen over the last few years, you might think it’s hard to get your hands on a decent budget-friendly laptop for school. However, it’s still possible to find laptops and two-in-ones with the latest processors from AMD and Intel, which help performance and battery life over previous generations.

The majority of our picks for the best college laptops run between $500 and $1,000. If you’re looking for a more affordable laptop — or if you’re open to an alternative to Apple’s MacOS and Microsoft Windows
— we recommend checking out the best Chromebooks for students
(just make sure any software you need for classes is supported). On the flip side, if you’re searching for a more powerful laptop, or a gaming laptop

Why I Switched to iPhone

9:03

After 10 years of being on Team Android, I’ve finally caved.

A few weeks ago — and after months of going back and forth — I went to my local Verizon store and ordered an iPhone 14 Pro. It may sound like I’m being overly dramatic, but the move signaled a big shift for me.

I’ve always prided myself on not buying into the Apple hype. Despite years of pestering from friends to switch to an iPhone, I pushed back, maintaining that I liked being different from the masses. Everyone around me has an iPhone. It felt good to defy the norm. And so for years, I stuck with my Samsung Galaxy devices, which I still believe are incredible phones.

But after conversations with friends and family about what I could get from the iPhone that I could never get with my Android, I started to reconsider my stance. Yes, I loved my Galaxy S10 Plus and everything it offered: a top-notch camera, a customizable interface and the greatest tool of all: Object Eraserwhich removes any unwanted people or objects from your pictures (Pixel has a similar feature). But at the end of the day, there was one big thing my Android could never offer: a seamless way to communicate with all my friends on the iPhone.

I’ve been told countless times that I ruin group chats by turning all the texts “green.” This, of course,

The Verge Guide to Amazon’s Prime Early Access Sale

| Computer, Computers

Amazon Prime Day is no longer a once-per-year shopping event. This year, the company is hosting a second deal extravaganza for Prime members called the Prime Early Access Sale, which kicks off tomorrow, October 11th, and runs through Wednesday, October 12th. If it’s anything like the two-day shopping blitz that is Prime Day, it’ll be filled with some of the lowest prices we’ve seen on 4K TVs, Amazon Echo devices, noise-cancelling headphones, gaming accessories, laptops, and more . We also expect to see competing deals at retailers like Target, Best Buy, and Walmart, all of which we’ll cover during the 48-hour window.

Like we’ve done in the past with Prime Day, we’ll be rounding up all of the details regarding Amazon’s fall sales event here, including our ongoing news coverage and our definitive post on the best deals happening at Amazon. We’ll also be highlighting a slew of useful how-to guides, so you’ll be in the know regarding how to get the best deals and price-match sales at other retailers.

Whether you were expecting Amazon’s Prime Early Access Sale or not, it looks to be a great opportunity to get the jump on your holiday shopping — after all, no one wants to be forced to do all of their shopping during Black Friday and Cyber Monday if they can help it. November 25th should be for sleeping in, not shopping.

The Absolute Best Horror Movies on Prime Video

| Computer, Computers

Big fan of horror movies? A decently large selection of classics and fresh scary flicks await on Prime Videos, from The Silence of the Lambs to A Quiet Place Part II. Dim the lights, grab the popcorn and let the nightmares begin.

These horror flicks are the very best Prime Video has to offer, all scoring 65 or above on Metacritic.

Universal

Jordan Peele and Nia DaCosta are at the helm of this gripping slasher. A sequel to the 1992 film of the same name, Candyman tackles issues such as gentrification and police brutality. Prepare for blood, swarming bees and people making the unfortunate decision to recite Candyman’s name in front of a mirror.

Paramount Pictures

World War Z explored the ramifications of a worldwide disease all the way back in 2013, but in this case the affliction turned sufferers into mindless zombies. Starring Brad Pitt as a former United Nations investigator Gerry Lane, the film follows the spread and potential cure of this widespread zombie plague.

Amazon

If you like your horror films interspersed with a bit of contemporary dance (and who wouldn’t!) then Suspiria is definitely the one for you. It tells the story of a supernatural dance academy run by a coven of witches and features themes like motherhood, guilt and abuse of power. An homage to the original 1977 film, Suspiria stars Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton.

‘Rick and Morty:’ Here’s When You Can Watch Season 6, Episode 7

| Computer, Computers

Rick and Morty season 6 has now entered a short-ish hiatus. With the season’s final four episodes floating somewhere out in space, the show is taking a break for several weeks until Nov. 20. I would be looking forward to it, but I’m still as scarred as Morty and Summer from the last Thanksgiving episode.

“Please use this time to expand your mind in preparation for the rest of the season,” Adult Swim said in an Oct. 9 tweets announcing the break. An image shows Rick holding his grandson’s eyes open.

So far, season 6’s episodes have dropped on Adult Swim on consecutive Sundays at 11 pm ET/PT. The first part of the season followed the adventures of Rick, Morty, Summer, Beth, Space Beth and Jerry. At the end of episode 6 — the most recent one that ran on Oct. 9 — Rick announced he has fixed portal travel after putting it off during the season.

Rick and Morty’s sixth season is expected to eventually hit HBO Max and Hulu (for those without Hulu + Live TV). In 2018, Adult Swim renewed Rick and Morty for 70 episodes. When season 6 wraps up, we’ll have seen 30 of those.

For more on season 6, I defer to this description from a press release: “It’s season six and Rick and Morty are back! Pick up where we left them, worse for wear and down on their luck. Will they manage to bounce back for more adventures? Or
