The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is only a few months old, but reports about what’s in store for Samsung’s next foldable are already emerging. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 may have a slot for storing Samsung’s S Pen stylus, suggests a report from Korean news outlet The Elec, an addition that would make it more useful as a note taking device. It would be a small but important change that addresses one of the Z Fold 4’s shortcomings and cements its place as a successor to the now-extinct Galaxy Note family.

The Galaxy Note debuted in 2011 and set the stage for today’s large-screened phones in our pockets. Samsung has similar ambitions for its foldables lineup. “Just three years ago, this category didn’t even exist,” TM Roh, president and head of Samsung’s mobile experience business, said during the company’s August keynote before announcing the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4. “Now we are leading it into the mainstream.”

While The Elec’s report doesn’t outright say the Z Fold 5 will have an S Pen slot, it suggests that is being heavily considered. Samsung reportedly cited the introduction of an S Pen slot as a key challenge that needs to be overcome to make foldable phones more popular, lighter and the crease less noticeable. Addressing such obstacles could be critical considering foldable phones are only expected to account for 1.1% of global smartphone shipments in 2022, according to the International Data Corporation. Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi came to Disney Plus on Wednesday, bringing six shorts in the same CGI animated style as The Clone Wars. Three follow legendary Jedi Ahsoka Tano (years before her encounters with The Mandalorian), with the others revealing the backstory of future Sith Lord Count Dooku during his career as a Jedi.

It’s set in the prequel eradecades before the events of original Star Wars movie A New Hope and current live-action show Andor.

The series is written by Clone Wars executive producer Dave Filoniwho’s currently working on the live-action Ahsoka series that’s scheduled to hit Disney Plus next year. He wrote the episodes while flying back and forth to shoot The Mandalorian.

Tales of the Jedi sees Ashley Ecstein return as Ahsoka, having voiced the character since her debut in 2008’s The Clone Wars movie, TV series, follow-up show Rebels and The Rise of Skywalker (Rosario Dawson plays the role in live-action).

In addition to her acting work, she also founded a fandom-focused fashion label Her Universe and voice-guided meditation series Star Wars: Mindful Matters and co-wrote activity, recipe and craft book Star Wars Everyday.

Nvidia touts a slower chip for China to avoid US ban TechCrunch

Two months after the US choke off China’s access to two of Nvidia’s high-end microchips, the American semiconductor design giant unveiled a substitute with a reduced processing speed for its second-largest market.

The Nvidia A800 graphics processing unit is “another alternative product to the Nvidia A100 GPU for customers in China,” a spokesperson for Nvidia said in a statement to TechCrunch. “The A800 meets the US government’s clear test for reduced export control and cannot be programmed to exceed it.” The new chip was first reported by Reuters on Monday.

The A100 processor is known for powering supercomputers, artificial intelligence, and high-performing data centers for industries ranging from biotech and finance to manufacturing. Alibaba’s cloud computing business has been one of its customers. A100, along with Nvidia’s enterprise AI chip H100, were placed under a US export control list to “address the risk that the covered products may be used in, or diverted to, a ‘military end use’ or ‘military end user’ in China and Russia.”

Nvidia previously reported that the US ban could affect as much as $400 million in potential sales to China in the third quarter, so the new chip seems to be an attempt to remedy the financial loss. The A800 GPU went into production in Q3, according to Nvidia’s spokesperson.

Indeed, chip distributors in China, such as Omnisky, are already marketing A800 in their product catalogs. The chip looks to be designed to circumvent US export rules while still carrying out other core computing

It’s unclear from the description whether Musk agreed to Beijing’s request, but Starlink’s service map shows no plans to deploy in China. Adjacent countries like Taiwan, Mongolia and Vietnam are listed as “pending regulatory approval.”

Offering a connection to the internet that sidesteps conventional service providers, Starlink has been a popular idea for circumventing network-based censorship around the world. Most recently, Starlink enabled access in Iran in response to widespread protests and accompanying censorship. Internet censorship in China, however, is far more organized and persistent — and any ongoing attempt to evade it through Starlink would likely incur retaliation from the central government.

The anecdote is a reminder of how exposed Musk is to international pressures, even as he champions free speech principles in his public statements. US FT points out, Tesla maintains a factory in Shanghai, and the company has reportedly sold more than 80,000 cars in China. Musk has remained broadly aligned with Chinese government as a result, even authoring a column for a magazine run by the country’s internet censorship agency.

At the same time, Musk is more likely than ever to take ownership of Twitter. After months of confusing gamesmanship, Musk recommitted last week to purchasing the social network at his originally agreed price, telling a judge in his civil case with the company that he believes the deal will close before October 28. Twitter remains officially blocked in China.

Netflix has a ton of world-class sports documentaries.

At the top of the pile is Untold, a series of immaculate features about the strangest, most incredible stories in sport over the past few decades. But there’s one documentary I rarely hear people discuss. And they should, because it’s incredible.

Coming in at an accessible 40 minutes, The Speed Cubers is a short, barely feature-length documentary about speed cubing, the act of solving different types of Rubik’s Cubes as quickly as possible.

Speed cubing is mind boggling. Most people would struggle to figure out a 3x3x3 Rubik’s Cube in hours if challenged, but the best can solve them in seconds. The Speed Cubers explores this subculture, focusing on the stories of two of the world’s fastest, the legendary Feliks Zemdegs and the new king of speed cubing, Max Park.

In some ways, Zemdegs is the Roger Federer of Rubik’s Cubes. Despite the fact every speed cubing record he once held has now been broken, he’s widely considered the greatest of all time, having established up to 121 world records and winning the speed cubing world championship twice, in 2013 and 2015.
