German carmaker Sono says its Zion solar electric car will be coming to the US, prompting a lot of questions about what solar cars can do. I checked out a Zion in person during its first US tour and found that the answers are more nuanced than with a big-battery Tesla or a Hyundai Ioniq5 that has trivial solar charging.

Range and where it comes from

The Sion promises 190 miles of range on a charge, but that isn’t all solar range: The sun can account for about 5,400 miles a years, which averages out to 70 to 150 miles per week or 10 to 20 miles a day. That’s less than many Americans drive and even that amount of solar range wouldn’t be evenly distributed across all days because of weather, seasonality and where you park, the solar car equivalent of carefully sitting rooftop solar for viability. When the car comes to the US it will have a solar position feature in its app to predict the amount of charge you’ll get in a given parking space.

Melinda Gates Opens Up About ‘Unbelievably Painful’ Divorce From Bill Gates

Melinda French Gates is sharing details about her “unbelievably painful” divorce from Bill Gates. French Gates was married to the billionaire Microsoft co-founder for 27 years. The couple divorced in August 2021. And perhaps surprisingly, the COVID-19 pandemic made that break a bit easier.

“I had some reasons I just couldn’t stay in that marriage anymore,” French Gates told Fortune (as reported by People). “But the odd thing about COVID is that it gave me the privacy to do what I needed to do.”

She added, “It’s unbelievably painful, in innumerable ways, but I had the privacy to get through it.”

Though the Gates’ three children are all adults now, their mother wanted to shield them during the shift.

“My main concern, of course, was trying to protect my kids through it,” French Gates told Fortune. “And we got to the other side.”

It isn’t the first time French Gates has discussed her divorce from one of the world’s richest men. In March, she told CBS’ Gayle King that she grieved the loss of her marriagea loss she never saw coming when they wed in Hawaii in 1994.

Bill Gates acknowledged an affair with a Microsoft employee during the marriage. In the interview with King, French Gates was asked if he had more than one affair, and she said only, “those are questions Bill needs to answer.”

The couple continue to run the philanthropic Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle.

More People Need to Watch the Very Best Documentary Series on Netflix

At CNET we’ve been putting together a huge amount of TV and movie recommendations. It’s been awesome! Discussing the best shows on Netflixor the best sci-fi series on Prime Video. Most of the time it’s easy to select our absolute favorites.

But when it was suggested I write about the “best documentary on Netflix” I began sweating. immediately. I maintain CNET’s list of best documentaries. I watch almost every documentary on the service as soon as they’re released.

Netflix has a lot of good documentaries.

I’d argue documentaries are the best thing about Netflix, period. There’s genre-defining true-crime series like Making a Murderer, Oscar-winning movies like Icarus, incredible nature docos like Our Planet. That’s before we even mention viral hits like Tiger King or Drive to Survive.

It’s almost impossible to choose just one.

But the nature of our recommendations at CNET is to choose something audiences might have missed, or something underrated. That’s why we tend to call out shows like Dark or For All Mankind on Apple TV Plus over established classics like Stranger Things.

So in that spirit, I am selecting Untold as my pick for best documentary series on Netflix. Because it’s rules. It rules so goddamn much.

Social Security is one of the top-searched financial terms on the internet right now.

Interest in the topic spiked after recent news that current benefits would receive a significant cost-of-living increase to help keep up with high inflation. And as the midterm elections approach, we’re hearing again how some Republican politicians want to throw these federal benefits on the chopping block.

“This is an ideological battle that’s been going on for 85 years,” says William Arnone, CEO of the National Academy of Social Insurance, a nonpartisan organization that aims to educate the public on Social Security’s benefits.

Like many employed Americans, I’ve been dutifully paying Social Security tax since my first gig in high school (I was a hostess in a 1950s-themed diner). I speak for my generation when I say that if the government decides to strip us of our monthly paychecks in retirement — watch out, Uncle Sam. Prepare to find us marching in the streets protesting this thievery, walking canes in tow.
