Retiring before you turn 40 is appealing to most of us. But the extreme lifestyle it takes to achieve this goal is not as easy to follow.

Financial Independence, Retire Early, or FIRE, is a lifestyle movement that encourages you to build a cushy nest egg — at least 25 times what you’ll need for annual expenses in retirement — so you can leave the workplace before the typical retirement age.

The FIRE movement hit the scene in 1992, but it really took off with millennials over the last 15 years. while the path to FIRE looks different for everyone, and there are various approaches within the movement, most of the journeys begin the same way: Land a well-paying job in your 20s, save a significant chunk of money (anywhere from 50% to 75% of your take-home pay), and live far below your means. Many FIRE participants also boost their incomes with a side hustle (or several side hustles) or through real estate investments.

It can also mean developing an obsessive focus on hitting your FIRE number, the specific amount of money you need to save to retire by your desired age.

The idea of retiring early has a universal lure that’s attracting plenty of followers, but FIRE is also getting its fair number of detractors. Some are dropping out because it’s exhausting. Others are realizing that it’s costing them relationships and experiences that no amount of money can recover.

Splatoon 3’s Big Season Update Adds X Rank, New Stages and More

Splatoon 3’s next content season is set to begin Dec. 1, Nintendo announced Monday. The Chill Season, as it’s called, will introduce a slate of new features and content to the online game, including additional stages, weapons and X rank battles.

Headlining the new content are two additional maps: Brinewater Springs and Flounder Heights. The former is a brand-new stage, while the latter is a returning map from the original Splatoon.

On top of that, three brand-new weapons and 10 returning ones are coming in the next season, as is an entirely new catalog. Similar to Battle Passes in other games like Fortnite, Splatoon 3’s catalog will level up as you play, in turn unlocking special emotes, gear, titles and other customization items as you hit different levels.

The Chill Season is also introducing X battles, highly competitive matchups for players who reach a high rank in the Anarchy Battles mode. Once you’ve reached X rank, you’ll need to wager X power to take part in these matches and compete for a spot on the leaderboards.

Finally, the new season will bring Splatoon 3’s first Big Run event. This twist on the Salmon Run mode will see Salmonid enemies invading one of the game’s regular stages. You can check out some of the upcoming content in the trailer above.

Cricket’s New App Lets Unlocked iPhone Users Trial AT&T’s Network For Two Weeks

Anyone considering switching to AT&T and curious to try out its network will now have a new and easier way to do it. The carrier’s Cricket prepaid subsidiary has launched an app called “tryCricket” that, well, lets you try its Cricket service that runs on AT&T’s network.

The app, which is available now in the App Store and will work with unlocked iPhones running iOS 15 or later, will allow you to sample service for 14-days. During the trial you will get 3GB of data — including 5G access — and a temporary phone number with unlimited talk and text.

You don’t need to give the company a credit card to try out the service. The app will walk you through the setup process and guide you throughout the trial period as well as help you switch to Cricket should you want to change wireless providers.

iPhone owners will get to try out Cricket’s network first. If you have a recently unlocked iPhone (XS, XR or later) Cricket will allow you to try its network using an eSIM, which can run alongside your existing provider and could be set up “in as little as 15 minutes.” If you have an older iPhone that doesn’t support the virtual SIM card, Cricket will send you a physical SIM which you can put into your phone.

‘House of the Dragon’ Episode 9: Alicent and the Prophecy Explained

Episode 9 of House of the Dragon validated our worst assumptions about Queen Alicent. Sadly, Alicent believes King Viserys’ dying wish was to have their son Prince Aegon succeed the throne. Really she should take into account all of Viserys’ words, instead of hearing what best suits her family over at House Hightower.

What exactly is the prophecy (part 1)?

All the way back in episode 1, King Viserys passes a family secret onto his daughter Princess Rhaenyra — a doomsday prophecy telling of the end of men. Let’s break down what Viserys says:

“Our histories… they tell us that Aegon looked across the Blackwater from Dragonstone, and saw a rich land ripe for the capture. But ambition alone is not what drove him to conquest. It was a dream. And just as Daenys foresaw the end of Valyria, Aegon foresaw the end of the world of men.”

Aegon refers to Aegon the Conqueror, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms in Westeros. He was the founder of the Targaryens’ ruling dynasty over Westeros but, as his prophecy reveals, he also wanted to unify the land against a common enemy.
