Stop scrolling on whatever streaming service you’ve been staring at, pop onto Prime Videos and watch 2013’s low-budget sci-fi flick Coherence ASAP — it’s free for subscribers, right now. I know. I just watched it… for the fourth time.

The initial premise of Coherence is fairly simple. A few friends meet up for a dinner party the same night a mysterious comet is scheduled to fly overhead. It begins as many indie movies do, with a troubled love story, tension between exes and witty banter.

Then the power goes out. It gets weird. Act two.

Inexplicable events ensue while the ensemble of characters scramble to restore the power. Nothing is as it had seemed. Some start to doubt where they are, others are more concerned with who they are. This isn’t a movie about longtime pals’ small talk. It’s a tale about them coming face-to-face with the terrifying truth of their reality.

If I share any more, I’d be risking massive spoilers about the shocking revelations uncovered during the film. I can assure you, though, that the onscreen confusion is potent enough to force you to question your own sanity.

Trump Announces 2024 Reelection Bid for President

Former President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will run for office again in 2024. His bid to become the Republican presidential nominee comes after several candidates he endorsed in the midterm elections lost their congressional races. He is the only US president to be impeached twice.

Trump threw his hat in the ring in front of a crowd at the Mar-a-Lago resort, which has served as his home since he left the White House. The 70-minute speech, at times rambling, contained many of the same talking points and false claims from his campaign two years ago.

“I will fight like no one has fought before,” he said.

The announcement comes a week after the midterm elections, which saw the Democrats retain control of the Senate. Republicans are poised to take control of the House, with a number of races still awaiting a final tally.

Ahead of the announcement, the White House put out a Twitter threads listing out the accomplishments of the Biden administration.

Trump, who had never previously held political office, beat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, only to lose his election bid to former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden in 2020. However, Trump refused to concede and instead spread lies that the election was “stolen.”

Amazon union organizers call off election attempt at a California warehouse

The Amazon Labor Union has withdrawn its petition to hold an election at an Amazon fulfillment center in Moreno Valley, California, according to Kayla Blado, a spokesperson for the National Labor Relations Board. It’s a sharp-turn around for organization efforts at the facility, known as ONT8; the petition was filed on October 12thand the NLRB had confirmed that there was a sufficient showing of interest to proceed with the election, according to The Los Angeles Times‘ Suhauna Hussain.

It’s unclear why the petition was withdrawn or if it has any relation to the ALU’s recent loss in Albany, New York. The withdrawal request isn’t currently publicly available, but petitioners don’t have to tell the NLRB why they’re withdrawing, according to Blado. The union didn’t immediately respond to The Verge‘s request for comments. Had the election proceeded, an estimated 800 full- and part-time employees would’ve been able to vote on whether to organize with the ALU.

Last year, the union won an election to organize Amazon’s JFK8 facility in Staten Island, where it’s currently trying to negotiate a collective bargaining contract with the company. However, it’s fought to repeat the historic victory, losing an election at the neighboring LDJ5 facility in May and another in Albany earlier this month. ALU’s president, Christian Smalls, called the latter election a “sham,” saying that it “wasn’t free and fair.”

Two Jupiter Moons Shine in Most Detailed Images Ever Taken From Earth

Jupiter’s jumbo-size moon Ganymede and icy moon Europa posed for the most detailed images ever taken of them from Earth. Planetary scientists from the University of Leicester used the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile to capture the images and study the moons’ surfaces.

You might be staring at these images and thinking “that looks kind of fuzzy,” and you’d be right. Compared with what NASA’s Juno spacecraft has seen by getting up close to those moons, the Earth-based images look unfocused. But that’s OK because this isn’t a beauty contest.

The researchers essentially conducted a cosmic fingerprint analysis.

“The new observations recorded the amount of sunlight reflected from Europa and Ganymede’s surfaces at different infrared wavelengths, producing a reflectance spectrum,” the university said in a statement on Monday. “These reflectance spectra are analyzed by developing a computer model that compares each observed spectrum to spectra of different substances that have been measured in laboratories.” This reveals the moons’ chemical processes by matching the reflectance data to known substances such as water and minerals.
