Sonic Frontiers Review: Delightful When Fast, Disappointing When Slow

Sonic the Hedgehog’s 2D video game adventures are widely lovedbut the Sega icon’s 3D entries have been so variable that they inspired the infamous Sonic Cycle meme: the reveal of each new game is met with hope that’s crushed when we play the disappointing final product.

Sonic Frontiers looks so spectacular that it inspired more excitement than usual because it hinted that our hero would be speeding and leaping around vast open spaces — the kind of gameplay some of us have dreamed about since the ’90s.

And the game, which hits PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on Tuesday, absolutely sings when you’re zipping through its vast open zones. Playing on PS5, running, hopping and grinding between objectives often proved a joyous experience. (I recommend switching from 4K visuals to 60 FPS in the menu if the option is available in your version.)

Sonic Frontiers lets you explore the vast Starfall Islands in a quest to collect series staple plot device the Chaos Emeralds and rescue his charming buddies after the group falls through a wormhole.

The game capitalizes on its hedgehog hero’s abilities beautifully, giving you just enough control that you feel engaged but never overwhelmed as you speed around. It’s a natural evolution of the gameplay first seen in 1998’s Sonic Adventure and a reminder of how effortlessly cool Sonic is.

It’s when I actually reached Sonic Frontiers’ objectives that the game’s shortcomings became apparent.

Snapchat rolls out more advanced video editing tools with Director Mode

Snapchat is giving users more powerful video tools through a new feature called Director Mode. It’s available starting today globally for iOS and Android.

Director Mode, first previewed in April, brings a handful of new features for filming and editing videos on Snapchat, including a few that are popular on other platforms. Green screen, for example, allows users to record videos with a background, similar to the TikTok filter of the same name. And dual camera, previously only available for iOS users, is a BeReal-esque feature that takes a front and back-facing photo or video simultaneously.

Other tools include quick edit, which allows users to trim and splice multiple videos together, and a camera speed feature to speed up or slow down videos. Director Mode is available via an icon on the main camera toolbar.

People can use Director Mode to make content to share with friends, but the emphasis on new editing tools comes as Snap tries to make a case for Spotlight, its TikTok competitor. Snapchat has introduced several programs to try to entice creators to make videos for Spotlight, including challenges that pay cash for top videos using different Lenses or sounds.

Boosting Spotlight usage is a priority for Snap. In an internal memo circulated in September, CEO Evan Spiegel said he wants 30 percent of Snapchatters using Spotlight every day in 2023. The company recently told investors that engagement on Stories was down; Snap laid off around 20 percent of its employees this summer.

More People Need to Watch the Best Documentary Series on Netflix

For more than a year, we’ve been putting together TV and movie recommendations here at CNET. It’s been fun! Discussing the best shows on Netflixor the best sci-fi series on Prime Video. Most of the time it’s fairly easy for us to select our favorites.

Not this time.

When someone suggested I select the “best documentary on Netflix” I started sweating. immediately. I maintain CNET’s list of best documentaries. I watch almost every documentary, be it movie or miniseries, as soon as they’re released.

And folks, Netflix has a lot of good documentaries.

I’d argue documentaries are the best thing about Netflix, period. There’s genre-defining true-crime series like Making a Murderer, Oscar-winning movies like Icarus, incredible nature docos like Our Planet. That’s before we even mention viral hits like Tiger King or Drive to Survive.

It’s almost impossible to choose just one.

But the nature of our recommendations at CNET is to choose something audiences might have missed, or something underrated. That’s why we tend to call out shows like Dark or For All Mankind on Apple TV Plus over established classics like Stranger Things.

So in that spirit, I am selecting Untold as my pick for best documentary series on Netflix. Because it’s rules. It rules so goddamn much.

Elon Musk learns the hard way that being a Twitter troll is way more fun than being a mod

I honestly did not think chaos would engulf Twitter so quickly, but I must admit: this rules. This owns so hard. Awoooou (wolf howl), Twitter is good again. We’re no longer locked in here with Elon Musk — Elon Musk has locked himself in here with us.

Musk took control of Twitter on October 27th. Since then:

Okay! So I have some thoughts about what the fuck is going on. First of all, Musk often changed his mind at Tesla, like when he decided he was going to close all the brick-and-mortar Tesla stores, then reversed himself, or the time he decided that Tesla was going to accept Bitcoin until, uh , it didn’t. Teslas were going to be built by an “alien dreadnought,” which didn’t work. The quick reversals are not unusual for Musk. It’s just that Tesla is a business Musk built around his fandom, who are more understanding of this kind of behavior.

Twitter, however, is an acquisition and is not necessarily a full of Musk fans. That means it’s a much less forgiving environment for Musk. Like, an early subset of Twitter users are Something Awful forum goons — the most prominent of whom is Dril — and they love fucking with people. Plus, Musk’s Twitter Blue plan to devalue verification check marks motivated a bunch of people who didn’t like Musk to go out with a bang by impersonating him, mostly because they knew it would make him mad. And it probably did!
