A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart.

Jordan Peele’s Nope is coming to Peacock next month

| Computer, Computers

Nopethe part-horror, part-sci-fi, part neo-Western from Get Out director Jordan Peele, will be available to stream on Peacock from November 18th. The film, which we called “a breathtaking celebration of filmmaking as an art form” in our review, stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as they investigate the supernatural goings on in the skies above their ranch.

Although Nope was well-received by critics, I have to admit I personally bounced off it when I saw it on the big screen. But Alissa Wilkinson’s writeup over at Vox has me interested in giving it a second watch. “Nope is centrally about how our experiences of reality have been almost entirely colonized by screens and cameras and entertainment’s portrayals of what it calls reality,” Wilkinson writes. “To the point that we can barely conceive of experiencing reality directly, with honesty and without any kind of manipulation.”

In addition to streaming the film itself, Peacock is also streaming a making-of documentary which will include behind-the-scenes footage as well as interviews with the cast and crew. Variety notes that Nope will require a paid Peacock subscription, which currently starts at $4.99 a month, or a discounted $19.99 for a year.

Why can’t pollsters reach Gen Z?

| Computer, Computers

Republicans predicted a “red wave” that would crush any hopes of a Democratic majority this election cycle. But as the dust settles and vote counts wrap up, that prediction has shattered.

While Republicans saw success in states like Florida and New York, Democrats fared better in battleground states, where polls often significantly underestimated their support. On the eve of the election, FiveThirtyEight‘s poll average had Dr. Mehmet Oz ahead by just half a point, only to see him lose by 4 percent in the final tally. In Michigan, the same average put incumbent Governor Gretchen Whitmer only five points ahead of her Republican challenger; but on election day, she won by more than 10 points.

Many Democratic strategists and White House officials have attributed the discrepancy to a record number of young people voting this year, a demographic that predominantly leans Democrat. Around 27 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 cast a ballot by Election Day, according to an early estimate from the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University, also known as CIRCLE.

As recently as 2014 and stretching back decades, youth voter turnout sat around 20 percent year over year. But that changed in 2018 when youth turnout spiked 16 percentup to 36 percent of the total.

Not everyone is convinced. David Shor, a popular Democratic data guru, argues “there was no ‘Youthquake’” since turnout among young people declined in 2022 compared to the

No One’s Safe From the Spirit Halloween Costume Parody Meme

| Computer, Computers

Still can’t decide what to be for Halloween? Consider going as a 30-minute phone call that could have been 15 minutes (or been an email, better yet). It’s one of the many creative 2022 costume ideas from Spirit, famed American retailer of Halloween getups. Well, one of the ideas from the internet dressing up as Spirit, that is.

The Fake Spirit Halloween costume meme involves adding an image and text to a blank template of a Spirit costume package. The meme started in 2019, but it’s really picked up this Spooktober.

The meme can get political (this is the Internet after all). Fake costumes jab at short-lived UK Prime Minister Liz Truss (“discard after 45 days,” reads the package for the Truss parody costume); President Joe Biden; Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene and local politicians. But a lot of the parodies just poke at stereotypes and pop culture figures.

There’s the venture capitalist costume that’ll have you wowing any party with your “generic advice” and “aggressive term sheets.” And the private equity associate costume, which comes with an “elitist personality” and “business jargon flashcards” (sorry, newsletter subscribers sold separately).

Pro tip: If you put on the rust cable knit sweater that comes with the geospatial-professional costume, be sure to read key phrases from the included phrasebook: “No, a PDF of tables is not a database.” “It’s like Google Maps with more layers.”

Perhaps you’d rather eschew the worlds of Wall Street and Silicon Valley this Halloween and aim for celebrity

‘Andor’ Episode 7 Explained: The Empire Heaps on Brutality in Star Wars Heist’s Aftermath

| Computer, Computers

We’re beyond the halfway point in Star Wars series Andor. Episode 7 landed on Disney Plus on Wednesday. After successfully stealing millions of credits from the Empire as part of a major rebel heist, Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) turned down an offer to betray his new allies and run off with the money.

Distraught after killing his would-be partner in crime, he goes it alone again. We know he’ll be back with the rebels eventually though, since this is all part of his journey to becoming the morally questionable hero we meet in Rogue One.

On galactic capital Coruscant, Cassian’s past crimes have also drawn the attention of Imperial Security Bureau Supervisor Dedra Meero (Denise Gough), who’s been dragged into work after hours as the Empire prepares for a horrible totalitarian security crackdown following the heist. Disgraced ex-security officer Syril Karn (Kyle Soller) is also nursing a grudge against our hero.

None of them know that the rebellion is being quietly run by Senator Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) and recruiter Luther Rael (Stellan Skarsgard).

Andor takes place five years before Rogue One, which revealed what happened immediately before the original Star Wars movie A New Hope. Continue if you’re willing to join Cassian on his journey into episode 7 SPOILERS.
