Huge Bluewalker 3 Mobile Phone Satellite Unfurls and Outshines Some Stars

Bluewalker 3 is officially in full peacock mode. The satellite has unfurled a first-of-its-kind 693-square-foot array in low Earth orbit, that’s designed to provide 5G broadband connectivity direct to mobile devices on the surface, essentially acting as humanity’s tallest cell tower.

The array is covered with solar cells on one side that collect energy to power the antennas on the opposite side.

The spacecraft is a test satellite operated by Texas-based AST SpaceMobile that was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in September. If all goes according to plan, the company will launch a series of over 100 even larger satellites called Bluebirds.

“Every person should have the right to access cellular broadband, regardless of where they live or work. Our goal is to close the connectivity gaps that negatively impact billions of lives around the world,” CEO Abel Avellan said in a statement Monday.

The company says it has “agreements and understandings” with mobile carriers around the world, including Vodafone, Rakuten Mobile, AT&T, Bell Canada, Telefonica, Telstra and several others. The space-based service will offer extended cellular broadband coverage with the goal of eliminating dead zones.

“Particularly in territories where terrain makes it extremely challenging to reach with a traditional ground-based network,” said Luke Ibbetson, head of Group R&D for Vodafone and an AST SpaceMobile director.

The satellite is being watched not only by those interested in the nascent potential of space-based 5G, but also by astronomers.

Google Pixel 7 Hands-On: New Look and Camera, Same $599 Price

Google’s Pixel 7, which was unveiled Thursday, is the company’s next major phone designed to compete with Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy lineup. The Pixel 7 features Google’s new Tensor G2 processor, a camera with improved zoom, face unlock and a slightly updated design — for the same $599 (£599, AU$999) price as last year’s Pixel 6.

The Pixel 7 launches on Oct. 13, with preorders available now.

The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro represent Google’s latest effort to establish a foothold in the global smartphone market, which Samsung and Apple largely dominate. The Pixel 7 is a modest upgrade, unlike last year’s Pixel 6, which was the first phone to feature Google’s self-made Tensor processor and a revamped design.

The Pixel 7’s debut follows the September launch of Apple’s iPhone 14which like the Pixel 7 only features minor improvements over its predecessor.

Google’s latest flagship phones are now available to preorder. Pixel 7 starts at $599 and will be released on Oct. 13. Get up to $750 off with trade-in and $200 in Google Store credit.

Blink-182 Reuniting Has Fans Excited, and Feeling a Little Old

Pop punk band Blink-182 — the outfit behind such songs as All the Small Things and What’s My Age Again — is going back on tour with founding member and guitarist Tom DeLonge.

The band posted an innuendo-laden video to multiple platforms on Tuesday featuring members DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker. This marks their first tour together in about 10 years. The tour itself kicks off in March 2023 and runs through February 2024, with nearly 70 stops around the world.

DeLonge left the band in 2015. In the last few years, Hoppus was diagnosed with lymphoma (and is now cancer-free) and Barker married Kourtney Kardashian. Blink-182, whose 1999 album Enema of the State went platinum five times over, celebrated its 30th anniversary in July. The group also said it would release a new song called Edging on Oct. 14. Tickets go on sale Oct. 17.

On social media, fans were quick to cheer the reunion. “Tom rejoining Blink 182 means the world is healing,” one wrote.

Some fans cracked jokes about the passage of time. Elder millennial humor abounded. “Blink-182 reuniting is the biggest news for millennials since AOL shut down Instant Messenger,” one tweeted.

Apple’s first unionized workers say the company is withholding new benefits

Organizers at Apple’s Towson Town Center store in Maryland claim that the company isn’t telling the whole truth when it comes to withholding benefits from workers at the location. As the company’s first retail location to unionize in the US pushes to negotiate a contract, workers say it’s making it difficult for them to bargain for their benefits.

In , the negotiating committee says they’re disappointed to learn the company won’t be offering workers at the location some new health and education benefits that are rolling out to other retail employees. The union also says that Apple has been spreading “misinformation” by saying workers would have to bargain for those benefits to be included in their contract.

“Apple management has not yet provided our union with any details about the new benefits”

“There is crucial context missing in this communication around the process of change within a unionized store and the fact that we can, and we will include these (and any new benefits) in our collective bargaining contract proposal,” says the letter, which you can read in full below. However, the union also claims that Apple has made it difficult to bargain for those benefits by not sharing “any details” about them.

Apple didn’t respond to The Verge‘s multiple requests for comment on the union’s accusations.
