Acer Chromebook Spin 714 review: worse than its predecessor

Acer’s Chromebook Spin 713 has been at the top of our Best Chromebook list for a few years running now. It’s one of the most beloved Chromebooks of the past several years, and it had a laundry list of things going for it: blazing fast Intel processors, a crisp and high-resolution 3:2 screen, a generous port selection with Thunderbolt 4, all -day battery life, and one of the better keyboards you could find in the Chromebook space. I had very high hopes for its sequel, the Chromebook Spin 714.

So it brings me no pleasure to report that the Chromebook Spin 714 is worse than the 713. That doesn’t make it a terrible computer — and at my Core i5 / 8GB / 256GB unit’s MSRP of $729.99, many of these flaws are more forgivable than they would be at a price of, say, $1,000. But I do see it, unfortunately, as a step back. Here’s why.

Why Google Pixels Aren’t as Popular as iPhones and Samsung Galaxy Phones

The Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have launched as the best Google phones yet, with better camera lenses, software and features, including an easier way for people with blindness or low vision to take selfies. The company added a bunch of Google Assistant features and touted new photography tricks like the unblurring of old photos.

It’s clear Google put a lot of work into its latest flagship phone. What’s less clear is whether anyone will care.

In a world dominated by iPhones and Samsung phones, Google isn’t a contender. Since the first Pixel launched in 2016, the entire series has sold 27.6 million units, according to data by analyst firm IDC — a number that’s one-tenth of the 272 million phones Samsung shipped in 2021 alone. Apple’s no slouch, having shipped 235 million phones in the same period.

The Pixel has long been a paradox of the mobile handset business. The family is the standard bearer for Android, the most popular mobile operating system in the world, bankrolled by one of the most successful and well-known companies. Yet it lags far behind its biggest rivals and is a niche player in a world that it basically controls.

It’s a bit baffling for Google’s phones to sell so poorly, since the Pixel phones have been well-liked by reviewers and consumers (at least the ones who’ve heard of them). Moreover, they’re the first phones to get new features and versions of Android months or even years before other phones.

‘House of the Dragon:’ King Viserys’ Episode 8 Prophecy Scenes Explained

Episode 8 of House of the Dragon introduced another jump forward in time — six years to be exact. Now, King Viserys seems to be the walking dead, Rhaenyra and Daemon are happily coupled and making babies, and Alicent and the Hightowers have made their mark on King’s Landing, introducing religion in a big way.

But that final scene was the big kicker: King Viserys unintentionally discussed the Targaryen’s important family secret — with the wrong person. Let’s discuss what that could mean going forward in the spoiler-packed section below.

What exactly is the Prophecy?

All the way back in episode 1, King Viserys passes onto his daughter Princess Rhaenyra a family secret — a doomsday prophecy telling of the end of men. Let’s break down what Viserys says:

“Our histories… they tell us that Aegon looked across the Blackwater from Dragonstone, and saw a rich land ripe for the capture. But ambition alone is not what drove him to conquest. It was a dream. And just as Daenys foresaw the end of Valyria, Aegon foresaw the end of the world of men.”

Aegon refers to Aegon the Conqueror, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms in Westeros. He was the founder of the Targaryens’ ruling dynasty over Westeros but, as his Prophecy reveals, he also wanted to unify the land against a common enemy. ‘ET’ Star Still Carries Lessons From Steven Spielberg’s Sci-Fi Classic 40 Years Later

It’s been 40 years since ET the Extra-Terrestrial landed right here in our memories, and watching this sci-fi adventure classic remains a delight in 2022. The movie stands among director Steven Spielberg’s finest work, with timeless visual effects and another stellar John Williams score.

ET follows 10-year-old Elliott Taylor as he befriends the alien botanist who’s accidentally left behind on Earth. If you somehow haven’t seen it, put it at the top of your list. The 1982 film is a stone-cold classic, and it surpassed Star Wars to become the highest-grossing movie ever (until Spielberg’s Jurassic Park took that spot in 1993).

To mark the milestone, Universal released a 40th anniversary edition of the movie on 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray and digital 4K last month. It includes more than 45 minutes of new bonus features, including a retrospective of the film and its lasting legacy, and a featurette with Spielberg reflecting on his career and the making of ET 40 years later, as well as the extras from previous releases.

At the heart of the movie is the bond between ET and Elliot, played by Henry Thomas. You might have seen him reunite with ET as an adult in a nostalgic 2019 Xfinity commercial.

WhatsApp Is Rolling Out Large-Group ‘Communities,’ 32-Person Video Chats

WhatsApp’s new “Communities” feature, which will support communication across larger organizations, is beginning its rollout alongside the addition of 32-person video calls, the company announced Thursday.

The Communities featureswhich is WhatsApp’s take on Telegram’s Groups and Channels sections, were first announced in April alongside the addition of emoji message reactions.

Using Communities, the Meta-owned chat app will now allow users to “bring together separate groups under one umbrella with a structure that works for them,” Meta said. This could include ways to coordinate among school groups or neighborhoods.

“It [communities] makes groups better by enabling sub-groups, multiple threads, announcement channels and more,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement. “All secured by end-to-end encryption so your messages stay private.”

Within WhatsApp communities, you’ll be able to do a number of new things such as receive updates sent to the entire community and organize smaller discussion groups. There will also be new tools for administrators such as announcement messages that can be sent to the whole group and control over which groups can be part of the community.

In addition to communities, WhatsApp is also rolling out other new features that can be used in both groups and communities, such as in-chat polls for group decision making, the aforementioned 32-person video calls and groups that allow up to 1,024 members.

Communities is rolling out globally and will become available to everyone over the next few months, Meta said.
