NASA’s DART spacecraft bumped an asteroid off its orbit TechCrunch

The demise of a spacecraft is usually something rather poignant. But two weeks ago, NASA celebrated one’s destruction.

On September 26, NASA executed the final stage of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), in which a spacecraft intentionally crashed into the asteroid Dimorphos to investigate whether such an impact could deflect an Earth-bound stellar object. A successful collision was the first cause for celebration, but now there’s even more reason to cheer. NASA has officially determined the DART mission a success, revealing in a press conference today that Dimorphos’ orbit has changed significantly due to the impact.

In crashing DART into Dimorphos, planetary defense researchers hoped the spacecraft’s kinetic energy would transfer to the asteroid, altering its path. In theory, the same method could be used to protect Earth from an incoming asteroid. (For what it’s worth, neither Dimorphos nor the larger asteroid Didymos, which it orbits, poses a threat to our planet.)

For mission success, DART needed to change Dimorphos’ nearly 12-hour orbital period around Didymos by at least 73 seconds. After two weeks of observations, the team revealed a 32-minute change in Dimorphos’ orbital period — more than 25 times longer than the benchmark for success.

“This result is one important step toward understanding the full effect of DART’s impact with its target asteroid,” Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division, said in a press release. “As new data come in each day, astronomers will be able to better assess whether, and how, a mission like

The last slot still up for grabs in the 2022 MLB playoffs will go to the winner of today’s game between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Guardians. The Yankees fended off elimination in Game 4, thanks for strong pitching by Gerrit Cole and another home run by Harrison Bader, his third of the series. For Game 5 in the Bronx, the Yankees will send Jameson Taillon to the mound and the Guardians will counter with Aaron Civale — neither of whom has started a postseason game yet. Game 5 is scheduled for 7 pm ET (4:07 pm PT) on Monday on TBS.

The Guardians beat the Tampa Bay Rays in their wild card series to advance to the Division Series against the Yankees. The Yankees own the second-best record in the American League, earning the right to skip the wild card round as well as getting home-field advantage in the five-game Division Series. The winner advances to the American League Championship Series to play the Houston Astros, who swept their Division Series against the Mariners.

Buy someone a book as a gift, and they have… one book. Buy someone a book-reading device, and they have access to almost any book ever published. I especially appreciate how E Ink readers have remained mostly single-function devices, focusing on reading (and occasionally note-taking), rather than branching out into games, video chats or work apps.

The most famous digital book reader is Amazon’s Kindle line, which uses E Ink displays and supports Amazon’s ebook storefront. Current models offer self-illuminated touchscreens, eliminating the need for an external book light. But beyond Kindle’s hardware, the Kindle app works on smartphones, iPads and other devices.

Other alternatives exist if you don’t want to buy through Amazon. For instance, Rakuten’s Kobo ebook readers work with most third-party vendors using the ePub book standard. And both Kobo and Kindle let you freely read loaner books from your local library.

We’ve also rounded up even more ebook readers hereand tested several big-screen multifunction E Ink devices that are more tablet-like and add stylus support.

My biggest overall shopping tip is that most Kindle devices are frequently on sale, and sometimes offer stacking trade-in deals on top of that, so you can often expect to pay less than the official retail price.

Mario, LeBron, Trump, Jesus Christ: Twitter is playing whack-a-mole with ‘verified’ users

Twitter verification used to mean “Twitter has checked you are who you say you are.” As of this morning, the only thing it means is that you’re coughing up eight dollars to join the club because Elon Musk decided that anyone can buy a “verified” check mark without any verification at all.

In the hours since, some hilarity has ensued.

Twitter is already taking action on some of these accounts: fake Nintendo, fake Trump, fake Valve, and fake LeBron have had their accounts suspended, for example. (Mario was up for roughly two hours, Valve for even longer.) Others are still around. The company says it is “aggressively going after impersonation and deception.” But it seems like it’ll be a game of whack-a-mole.

While Musk has claimed that this new system will deter spammers, it’s now crystal clear how it can empower fake news — though users can still check to see why an account was verified if they click or tap on the badge instead of blindly retweeting.

Twitter also briefly attempted a two-tier check mark system this morning, but Musk “killed it” after just a few hours.
