How to increase your personal safety with Pixel and Samsung phones

While there has — rightly — been a great deal written and broadcast about how to deal with attacks and privacy violations online and via social media, there is now increasing attention being paid to helping people stay safe in their homes and out in the world.

Android phones have, over the last few years, added several personal safety features to their toolboxes. Because the apps and features that come with the phones can differ depending on the manufacturer, what follows are some of the ways you can use the tools offered by Pixel and Samsung phones. If you have an Android phone from a different manufacturer, your best bet is to see what you have that is similar to what comes with either of these phones.

Pixel phones come with a Safety app, which offers a variety of ways to help ensure your personal safety. To access all its various features, look for the Safety app in your app drawer — if it isn’t already there, look for the Personal Safety app in the App Store. When you first open the app, you will be offered the chance to run through several demos that will show you how to set up the included tools.

Samsung has several equivalent emergency measures on its phones, which we will look at as well. And if you have another type of Android phone, you may have similar features; use the directions below as a guide to try to find your equivalents.

Intel’s Mobileye Self-Driving Car Unit Prices IPO Above Range

Mobileye, Intel’s self-driving car unit, has priced its IPO at $21 a share, a dollar above its target range, the company said in a press release Tuesday.

Mobileye raised $861 million on the sale of 41 million shares. The company had previously offered guidance that the IPO could be priced at between $18 and $20 per share.

Mobileye has been testing its autonomous vehicles in cities around the world to one of their ability to handle a variety of factors, such as weather conditions, urban layout, traffic signals and driving styles. Its existing advanced driver-assistance system cameras are built into models from Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota and others.

The IPO values ​​Mobileye at about $17 billion, far below the $50 billion valuation that Intel initially expected. The lower valuation reflects the turmoil the IPO market has experienced this year, creating what’s considered the worst IPO drought in 20 years.

Rising inflation and interest rates, combined with recession fears, have pushed investors to safer alternatives. US IPOs have raised a little over $7 billion so far this year, according to data from Dealogic.

Intel, which acquired Mobileye in 2017 for $15.3 billion, announced its plans to take the subsidiary public in September but reportedly plans to keep a majority stake in the company after the IPO. Mobileye sold only a 5% to 6% of shares that will ultimately be outstanding, The Wall Street Journal reported, far less than the typical 10% to 20% for most IPOs.

Two Lots of Blood Pressure Medicine Recalled: Is Yours Affected?

Two types of quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets made by Aurobindo Pharma USA are being recalled because they contain too-high levels of nitrosamines. These compounds are commonly found in water and foods — including meats, dairy products and vegetables in lower levels — but may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels over long periods of time. This is according to the voluntary recall from Aurobindo, which was posted by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide are used to treat hypertension, or high blood pressure. Two lots of Aurobindo’s 20 mg/12.5 mg are included in the recall, both with expiration dates through January 2023, and the specific lot numbers can be found in the recall announcements on Oct. 25. The tablets are pink-colored and round, with “D” printed on one side and “19” on the other side.

If you have this medication, you should talk with your doctor before you stop taking it, the notice posted by the FDA said. Untreated high blood pressure can raise the risk of stroke, heart attack and other serious health issues or medical emergencies, so you should discuss the risks and benefits of finding another medication.

Twitter reactivated the new ‘Official’ gray checkmark for accounts that are actually verified

Okay, so Twitter broke its own verification system by making the blue check — previously a signal that the account had provided information about its owner’s identity — available for purchase. Yesterday, which is approximately a month ago in Elon Musk time, a solution rolled out: gray checks that indicated that the account was official. By the end of the day, those checks had been rolled back.

Got all that? Great. After a great deal of impersonation, hoaxing, and other brand-unsafe behavior from the newly-purchased blue checks, the gray “official” checks are back.

Brands such as Coca-Cola, Twitter, Wired, and Ars Technica have the new-old gray checks (but not @Vergewhich is, we promise, our real one, unlike this importer account). This morning, Musk, Twitter’s new owner, said that there are too many “corrupt legacy Blue ‘verification’ checkmarks.”

Those “corrupt” checks were, of course, unpaid — unlike the ones that have been causing mayhem by imitating brands such as Nintendo, Eli Lilly, and Tesla. A blue check costs $7.99, as part of Twitter Blue, and Musk said it will be the “great leveler” when he got rid of the gray checks yesterday. Twitter product lead Esther Crawford (who is now sporting a Twitter Blue-purchased Verified stamp on her account) said earlier this week that the gray checks would return, with a focus on “government and commercial entities to begin with” instead of individuals.

iPhone 14 Pro vs. 13 Pro: 4 Significant Ways the Cameras Are Different

Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro has several camera system improvements that have led to Stellar reviews, including a 48-megapixel sensor and the company’s new image-processing technique called the Photonic Engine. This immediately puts the iPhone 14 Pro at an advantage over last year’s iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Maxat least on paper.

But how big of a difference do these new hardware and software features actually make in the real world?

I compared the cameras on both phones in a range of challenging situations around San Francisco to find out. All these photos were taken in the default camera app on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro, both running the latest version of iOS 16.
